Welcome to the World, South Sudan

On July 9, 2011, planet Earth welcomed its newest country. Having declared independence after a decades-long civil war, South Sudan is a newborn nation full of promise.  South Sudan is the 193rd player in the United Nations playground, its 6-year old government is learning to run, and its even starting to tweet from @RepSouthSudan!

Up until now, moms in Onura village have been dying in childbirth because the midwives delivering babies lacked simple sterile supplies. What better way to celebrate the birth of a nation than to ensure safe deliveries for moms and babies in South Sudan?

Let’s rally this week and throw a baby shower for South Sudan’s Onura clinic. No silly games or gift wrap necessary for this party; just simple supplies that will save lives. What gift will you give?

Whatever you give will go a long way. Thank you for your generosity in helping the Onura women  in South Sudan.

100 Women Become Beekeepers in Onura

Hope Ofiriha’s Onura Beekeeping Project has raised $3,328 on GlobalGiving, and the results are just terrific. The project is running very well under the guidance of the village’s woman project manager and her team at the Onura Women’s Beekeeping Association. Women’s businesses are growing steadily larger and the local economy is also expanding noticeably in Onura sub village where the project is running.

The beekeeping project will provide local women with the opportunity to learn a sustainable agricultural skill and earn an income to support their families. The local women’s group selected 100 participants, who learned beekeeping skills and how to market and sell the honey they produced.

After the end of the training, each graduating women received two beehives. Now, the women are equipped with the tools and skills to provide for their families; in the past, these women had no source of income and were dependent on male family members.

Rekele Dudu, one of the 100 women who participated in the training, said, “as a result of this project, I am now running my own beekeeping business and now I have a source of income to support my family.”She added, “My family wanted to leave Onura and move to Juba town due to the poor economic situation and lack of employment, but now that we have a source of income, we don’t need to leave our Onura village.”

With marketable skills and agricultural knowledge, women like Ms. Rekele are improving stability in South Sudan and for their own families.

Thank you Hope Ofiriha supporters! Thank you donors! Thank you GlobalGiving!

Pigs for Education Project Fully Funded

Thanks to our generous donors, phase one of our Pigs for Education Project is fully funded! The more than $1,000 donated will buy 30 pigs for Omilling village’s six most destitute families who are eager to send their children to school.

Giving pigs to widows and their destitute families will provide a much-needed income boost to help pay for vital basics like food, medicines, and shelter. More importantly, the boost will prevent young children from having to drop out of school to help earn money for their families.

ChooseAneed.org—a church-based 501(c)3 in the United States providing relief for the poor, distressed, or under-priviledged—is our fundraising partner on the project. Our other ChooseAneed.org project, the Onura Primary School Project, is only $700 from reaching its amount to fund of $3,140.

Thank you ChooseAneed.org! Thank you Hope Ofiriha donors!

Don’t Want to Bring Gloom & Doom to Holidays

I don’t want to bring gloom and doom to your holidays, but I do want to make sure all our supporters are aware that we are less than three weeks away from a referendum vote that might partition Sudan and start a return to bloodshed.

If you don’t mind interrupting your holidays to learn more about this potentially dire situation, the Sydney Morning Herald has put together an excellent multimedia website about it entitled Sudan: Referendum of Hope. Former Sudanese child soldier turned rap star, Emmanual Jal, has set up another great website entitled We Want Peace. The site contains his We Want Peace music video, which has gone viral on YouTube.

If you’d like to make a donation to Hope Ofiriha to help us better handle what lies ahead, please visit our Support a Project page or pick a donation option at the top right of every page at then click donate now.

10 New Microloans Given to Women Refugees

Thanks to kind support of our Uganda Microloans Project, Hope Ofiriha is pleased to announce that it has granted loan to ten (10) new additional women to start their income generating business. With their ability to generate income and save profits these women can better protect themselves and their children in areas of poverty, education, and heath. In the six months to come these women will invest in the education of their children by paying school fees through profits earn from their businesses.

During the month of August 2010 Sudanese women in Kampala held their annual meeting to elect new office-bearer and pass new resolutions. The meeting took place at Kibuli – zone in the outskirt of Kampala. They have 4 office bearers, with Miss Beatrice Adul their chairperson.

Mrs. Laura Iteng a widow began selling charcoal business through GlobalGiving donations. She has practically improved her living condition since leaving local beer breweries. She states – “these days I am very happy, I am very motivated to work to care of myself with the loan I got. I save sum of my profits and pay my monthly installments. I have my saving bank account I deposit a week $20, and this also have given me value to participate in the local social affairs of my community among the Sudanese women in Kibulu-zone.

Quote from Mrs. Laura iteng (widow): I have been in extreme poverty since I became a refugee 21 years ago. I have no house to put my head in, no food, and medical care. But with $150 loan (biggest amount I ever get at one time) my life transformed. I will not be a poor woman again and I will make sure my business never fails. Without this business I have no life.

Once again we are very grateful to our donors for the support they shown to forgotten Sudanese refugee women in Kampala. You will be hearing from us in next three months with latest update.

Thanks for partnering!

HIV-AIDS Project Makes Remarkable Change

Hope Ofiriha’s Omilling HIV-AIDS Project has made a remarkable change increasing the number of people knowing their HIV status.

In Omilling Sudan, 1 out of 5 is HIV-infected. If people can find out their status, they can take necessary steps to remain negative or access care, and treatment services if positive. To further this goal, Hope Ofiriha made a decision to expand HIV-awareness campaign and counseling availability by visiting HIV-experts. Integrating HIV-awareness program into local health services allows local volunteers to offer testing and counseling as a standard component of medical care which can reduce the stigma attached to receiving an HIV test since very patient is asked if they want to be tested.

Proactively offering testing and counseling also can increase acceptance of HIV testing among the populations who are most likely to be infected. Hope Ofiriha invites HIV-testing experts to rural areas three times a year.

Since the start of this program, Hope Ofiriha has been campaigning to raise awareness of HIV-AID, how to avoid contracting the killer disease, and to how to treat and live with it. The project works in partnership with the Omilling Traditional Authorities. 3000 people have attended the educational workshops on HIV-AID since the start.

“We have a strategy, “Alice says, that we began almost a year ago. “Think wide and start small.”That method paid off: four villages of the Omilling are now awareness of HIV-AID. To date, the community’s 1 trainer have trained a total of 2 HIV-awareness volunteers, they now being integrated into local different health facilities to give a 30 minutes talk, and a 30 minutes question and answer session on daily basis to output services patients.

A long the way our HIV-campaigner is facing a huge challenge in sustaining this program but with optimism. She needs fuel to power the motor bike to visit more villages, and materials for HIV-campaign and training.

We are grateful to our GlobalGiving donors for the supports they have shown during the difficult months, and Hope Ofiriha will be working with them until the project has achieve its goal.

Thanks for your ongoing support!
