FAQs & Volunteering
If I choose to give a school fees donation how much do I have to give?
We are happy to receive a donation for any amount. Contact us via: uganda@ofiriha.org; or send us the amount you want to give in one of the ways mentioned under “How do I pay?” below.
What happens if my sponsored child gets sick?
A doctor will be contacted by school matron in the local area and your child will get treatment and medicine. You will also be informed on the progress of the treatment.
Can I sponsor more than one child?
Yes. You can sponsor as many as you wish.
How do I follow up on my sponsored child’s progress?
As a sponsor, you will get in direct contact with your child. Here you can see pictures of the child, you can write to each other and you will get details of how your sponsored child is doing at school. Visits can be arranged if you wish to visit your child.
How long must I commit myself to be a sponsor?
Your time commitment is up to you. We hope that you will help your sponsored child until he or she has finished at least their primary education. Also, we would like to encourage you to continue supporting “your” child through secondary school, high school and possibly university. Your sponsorship is of course voluntary. So if you for any reason you want to terminate your support, you can write to us via: Uganda@ofiriha.org. We ask that you kindly pay 3 months in advance before you quit your sponsorship so that we can be able to find another sponsor in order to keep the child in school.
How do I pay?
You can pay in one of the following ways: By credit card online (VISA or Master card). You can choose between monthly, quarterly, or yearly payments.
- By mailing a check or international money order to HOPE OFIRIHA, P.O. Box 28784, Kampala, Uganda.
- By transferring the amount to: HOPE OFIRIHA, P.O. Box 28784, Kampala, Uganda.
Monthly – $35.00 USD
Quarterly – $106.00 USD
How much does it cost to sponsor a child?
You commit yourself to pay a certain amount each month, which we recommend to be paid quarterly. For children in day-care facilities and primary school, a monthly fee of 29 EURO will cover school fees, school books, uniforms, food and medical help. For children in secondary school and up, the monthly fees will increase twice. You can then choose to stay as the only sponsor by paying more or share sponsorship with someone else and keep up with the regular payment of 29 EURO.

Volunteer
What is a volunteer?
Volunteer is a person who does something especially in helping other people in need peacefully, willingly and without being forced to, or asked to and paid to do it.
Volunteer Wanted in Magwi County Sudan! If you are very enthusiastic, proactive individual, hard-working and self – driven motivated and are very much able to work under your own initiative in rural areas, then our programme might be good for you. You don’t need to be fully qualified teacher or medical professional to apply to join our programme, although we prefer that you are a graduate from a know university. If this describes you as a person we looking for you. Keeping reading following pages very well.
If you want to volunteer at Southern Sudan and you are searching for a life – touching experience that will benefit the people of Magwi County, then our volunteer programmes could be for you. HOPE Ofiriha’s programme base is located at ONURA Sudan, Africa. You will be moved forever by the warm, friendly people at Onura sub community. Life is completely simple, yet very rewarding. This is an ideal opportunity to volunteer in Sudan.
Who:
HOPE Ofiriha volunteers are typically enthusiastic, hard-working, self-motivated and proactive people who are able to work under their own initiative. They do not take jobs away from local Sudanese– they assist them with the various projects running in the area around ONURA Sub Community. HOPE Ofiriha volunteers are also realists – they know they won’t change Sudan, but they hope they will make a difference to the lives of some of the local people.
Age Range:
Our volunteers are aged 18 years upwards, and are typically between 20 and 50 years old. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider applications from applicants under 18 years old. As a volunteer abroad, you will be part of the team at ONURA, and it’s important for you all to nurture the team spirit. You may well make some life-long friendships during your stay.
The Volunteer Programme:
Unlike many volunteering operations, our volunteer programme is not rigidly structured. It is really up to you what you become involved with when you reach Onura. The local community has so many needs that we find it is better all round if volunteers find their ‘niche’ once they reach Onura and have had time to talk to the other volunteers, the Coordinators, and our Managers, and also have been able to have a good look at the general area, the primary school, the nursery schools, the health centre, etc. However, it often takes our volunteers some time to settle into life at Onura Sub community. You must be prepared to be patient as the pace of life in southern Sudan is much slower than you will be used to.
The vast majority of our volunteers have the time of their lives, but a few have found it difficult to become fully involved. You will get the most out of the programme by being enthusiastic, resourceful and imaginative – and it’s important to remember that you will get out of it what you put in.
The Projects:
All of our projects are focused on finding simple, low-cost local resources to solve a wide variety of problems faced by the local community at Onura and the neighbouring villages. We fully understand our volunteers’ desire to ‘make their mark’ during their stay at Onura. However, it is important to remember that, once they have left the programme, any project with which they have been involved must be sustainable (and also easily replicated) so that the members of the local community can continue to run it themselves. All too often we have seen Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) bring money and Western expertise to a project, only for the project to fail once the NGO has left because the local people have neither been given the training nor the money to keep it going.
Placement Length:
We would prefer our volunteers to make a commitment of a minimum of three months, although shorter stays can be arranged (see below).
Short stays:
Realistically, you will not be able to achieve a tremendous amount during a short stay, but you will be able to get involved with some projects. Your stay will also give you the benefit of experiencing life in a rural area of southern Sudan.
