Mairo School

These pupils have passed their exams to start primary 4, but the closes school is 70km to and from each day. The children do not have a street to walk on, school bus to ride, or a bicycle to help them with 70km journey through the wild bush.

These children have to walk 70 km to and from school each day

We are a charity undertaking school building projects to give poor children in Omiling sub Boma Sudan care and high quality education. By building our own schools based on charity donations and fund-raising, we will have good teachers; good study content and teach the children to be self-sufficient.

We need your help to start our school building project. If you want to dedicate some of your time helping us with fund-raising, please contact us. If you want to give a charity donation to the project, please take a look at our education donation list and find something you want to sponsor. Do good and give a charity donation!

Through out most of Omilling sub Boma like any where in Sudan, there is a tremendous lack of resources in all areas and this is noticeable in schools as it can be seen on current school below. Mairo primary school has only one double classroom for over 2018 pupils. Currently,  about 1019 pupils are using these dilapidated temporary structures.

Teachers, Juma, Loti and veteran teacher Inyasio

This is a very large and worthwhile project and we need funding for classrooms, teachers’ houses, toilets, etc., so that we can start with the building program.

Title of project: Mairo primary school building project – Sudan

Project Location

This project will be located at Onura sub Boma – Magwi County Sudan.

Description of the project

The purpose of this project is to enable the numerous children from remote mountainous areas to attend school. It is also to build several classrooms, and to provide learning materials, and teaching resources. In addition the project will improve health sanitation in the school environment.

The aims of the project

  • to build 8 classrooms and 8 teacher’s houses
  • to build 1 reception office
  • to build 1 store and 1 library
  • to build 4 pit latrine toilets (school pupils) and 3 teachers’ pit latrine toilets

Justification of the project

Level of education, the crucial reason why this project is needed is the low level of education. According to the local census in 2006 undertaken in five villages of Omilling community it was found out that majority of people have no education, and 99% of female can not read and written. There are no female (girls, and women) who have completed primary education leave alone secondary education. This was due to the fact that Omilling has been neglected by the past Magwi local government. As a result the community has been left behind in all areas of development.

Low school enrollment

Currently, the number of pupils who are at Mairo primary school are only 250 pupils and 60 are girls; this is insufficient because we have registered 2018 pupils in 2008. The consequence of limited space is that pupils cannot have evening classes or study appropriately because there is no electricity when it is dark. In this regard there is a great need to construct more classrooms to cater for these growing demands.

Unsanitary school environment

The school has no toilets and the pupils and teachers are forced to find other means. The school ground great unpleasant smell and poor sanitary conditions. In order to improve sanitation in this school a pit toilet project must be undertaken.

Inadequate teaching materials

the final problem is the teaching materials. The school has never bought teaching materials and physical equipments (PE). This has led to the boredom and physical detriment of many pupils. Furthermore, the school has no curriculum textbooks and the pupils have no textbooks available for learning due to lack of fund.

Benefits accruing to target

550 school age boys and 300 school age girls with teachers will benefit immediately from this project. 150 new pupils will be admitted yearly once there are enough classrooms.
150 young women aged 25-35 will receive short term life skills training for 8 months every yearly, and 50 men will also benefit from the literacy program.

Expected output

The output of this project will depend on three parts: project management, labor, and monitoring. The management will be conducted by the project director, Omilling school committee. The labor will be carried out by the people of Omilling community free of charge.

Expected results

  • school building constructed on permanent structures
  • Supplying of teaching materials – ongoing activities
  • More and more children will get quality education
  • Community will get better and lives of its people will also improve
  • Girls from local areas will have more life choices due to education they will be getting

Execution

The local volunteer from Omilling sub Boma will be responsible to provide free labor until the competition of the entire project.

Sustainability

The government of southern Sudan will pays for teacher’s salaries and supplying teaching and study materials on yearly bases. It will also recruit new teachers to teach at Mairo once the building project is completed.

The pupils will clean the school areas and the villages have agreed to contribute fund necessary for routine maintenance of the school building, and pit toilets. The local community will also provide the labor needed to perform this maintenance.

Monitoring and Evaluation

All activities shall be monitored and evaluated by Hope Ofiriha, Magwi local government, and Lofiriha Traditional Authorities.

Conclusion

This project is designed to produce maximum results. The vast majority of money will be used in purchasing building supplies. The main office local costs are kept to the minimum. The local workers of this project will be chosen on the basis of their ability and a real passion for improving the educational opportunities for local children from Omilling community. We are confident that this project will have major and long lasting benefits for the Omilling rural communities and that it will make a major contribution on poverty reduction.

Living at Onura Sub Community – Southern Sudan

How much does it cost to live at Onura?

There is a guide to typical costs in the extra Costs, flights, etc. Section above.

What clothing do I need to bring?

Please read what to “Bring” below.

Can I drink the water at Onura community?

Yes, you can drink the water as it comes from a running river but we suggest you bring water purifying tablets and use in the water.

Where do I buy my food?

Normally, the volunteers have a “kitty and most basic food can be bought locally, i.e. fruit, vegetable, bread, drinks. There is a supermarket in Magwi town (35km away) where you can buy bacon, breakfast cereals, etc. Your “big shop” will be in Juba where there are a variety of different food shops, pharmacies, etc.

Can I swim in the river water at Onura?

The short answer is “yes”. People are often worried about bilharzias (schistosomiasis) and, although this is present in most African fresh river water, it is normally found where there are reeds, water snails, slow – moving water and people. At Onura, there no reeds and there is good running water, and to our knowledge, none of our volunteers have contracted bilharzias. There are crocodiles in some of deep rivers bank and these occasionally wash further away toward water direction during rainy season. We do advise volunteers not to swim between 4pm and 5am because crocodiles are their most active at night.

How many volunteers will be staying at Onura community, and what ages and gender?

Normally there will be up to 15 volunteers staying at any one time, although there may be up to 18 volunteers at Onura for short periods when volunteer placements overlap. Our volunteers are normally graduates, but we recruit various people who are dedicated to helping the local community and who we feel have suitable abilities. To date, the youngest volunteer has been 18 years old and the oldest has been 50. The normal age for volunteers is between 19 and 25 years old. The majority of our volunteers are female but the number of male volunteers is increasing, and we have also some couples.
